Now, you all know our unswerving love for DJ Sprinkles aka Terre Thaemlitz. The protean artist from New-York City who emigrated in Japan ten years ago, able to go from writing essays about Deleuze to talking about Gary Numan, the downtown 80's queer scene, and this particular sound which characterizes him, that is to say non compressed, almost "absent" kicks, a music that flirts with downtempo (he even says it himself that, often, some people fall asleep (!) to his mesmerizing abstract DJ sets). But beware, this means "you can't see the wood for the trees"-under this apparent delicacy hides a deaf muting impenetrable violence. It has the means for striking the human's heart with few patterns and sequences. The track that we chose, illustrates with eloquence this confrontation. It will be part integral to the radical album project named "Routes Not Roots" which will see the day in January 2011 on the SKYLAX label.
We can easily imagine all the difficulties Terre met in the puritan America. It surely explains his exil in Japan. Defining himself as a non gay, non straight but more as an androgynous which is, for him, a perfect lacking in of choices and conventions state- Pure Freedom. This is what we feel leaning towards his "songs" which puts away all the basic musical House codes so as to bring us to a new elsewhere, a world in which all individual has the possibility to refocus and achieve to a better knowledge of itself.
In many respects, he reminds us in a paradoxically way techno's fundamentals. When the Underground Resistance militia would imagine a new world for the black population, far from oppression, alienation, a sort of "Final Frontier".
Routes Not Roots will probably be the most profound&highly personal piece of music in 2011. A revolution into the paralized world of House music. Nobody ever mixed his personal story with the art he contributed to spread at the same time. a perfect symbiosis. Silence loves the fact that Terre does not mystify any era, he considers House as a lonesome pariah music which never liberated bodies nor spirits except at an individual level. That is the case for most musics. He could care less about peace, love and unity; sharp-cutting edge, he is the quintessence of what an artist should be- with no concession, he sees truth without any makeup- facing the truth.
Hardrock Striker, the project's initiator, says: "as a kid, I was fascinated by rock stars such Bowie or the Warhol's Velvet Underground. I've always searching their succession, I think we just found here the missing link because this is what todays' rock is.
A legend is born.
